Thanks for all your replies, they cleared up a bit. Also sorry for not following up on that, but the code has undergone a kind of an earthquake, which made the entire thing unnecessary, at least in the short term. It was a hacky solution for the wrong problem anyway :). I might still want to revisit this later, but that will be when I know the rest of my code is sound and sane, which wasn't the case previously.
