The Elephant developers helped me find the problem: I was using the wrong repo URL. I pulled the wrong version (an old 2008 version) from: http://www.common-lisp.net/project/elephant/darcs/elephant
While the correct URL should be: http://www.common-lisp.net/project/elephant/darcs/elephant-1.0 I suggested to the elephant team to close/disable the old repo. Sorry for all the fuss I caused.
