5.2.x for Solaris is only supported on SPARC, not AMD/Intel.
Furthermore,
we only support Solaris 8, although several have reported that
Solaris 9
works. Not sure about Solaris 10, offhand.

We certainly welcome the input you provide on this list from an
official Apple perspective, but it is worth noting for others here
that many of us use non-supported platforms for deployment. In fact,
back in the day when XServe was a bit of a joke (G4, non-ECC memory,
etc) there were few other options.
For what it is worth, we have run WebObjects 5.0.x through to 5.2.x
on FreeBSD without a single problem that was related to the OS or
JDK. With a few minor hacks to the adaptor source code it is pretty
easy to get it to compile. And well, everything is Java which is
supposed to be cross platform. We run about a dozen different
applications serving roughly a million pages a month together.
I understand why Apple is pushing people toward OSX as the one and
only deployment and development platform for income reasons, but not
everyone here wants to move that way. We are finding the tussle
between deployment versions, development versions, XCode versions and
OSX versions a real royal pain. We've had to recently move back to
OSX 10.3.9, XCode 1.5 and WO 5.2.3 because of this combination of
problems. It is really impossible to upgrade one part at a time and
WO 5.3 still has too many bugs.
For anyone trying to compile the adaptor, please try the following:
* use the source from Project Wonder. It is improved over the Apple
version.
* make sure you use gmake (this is an issue on BSD where BSD make
differs slightly)
* just compile the Apache module and forget CGI, etc.
# cd /usr/local/apple/Developer/Examples/WebObjects/Source/Adaptors/
Apache
# gmake
Once you get those bits right I've had no problems on FreeBSD 4.x,
5.x and 6.0RC1 compiling and running the adaptor. I assume most
platforms will be also be equally simple.
I only hope that Apple are not planning to lock WO into OSX in some
way by working around the cross-platform nature of Java. I believe
that the extra XServe sales will be more than balanced by the loss in
goodwill.
Isn't it ironic that a purely Java application (apart from 709 lines
of Apache module) is not certified to run on anything newer than a
five year old OS from the people who invented Java?
