Subject: WO Deployment
Hi !
I'm a Mac-fan, IT-Manager in a Windows/Linux-only place (HP/IBM/Epson/
Lexmark/Acer Service center).
I've managed to have the bosses buy me a PowerBook but so far haven't
been able to sell them on an XServe. I'm transitioning most Windows
things to linux though, which is a start.
I've been asked to create an application to store customer
warranties, to be used by windows/linux clients and ultimately the
web. I'm competing with MS Access / SQL Server here.
I've created the DB in MySQL and have started coding with PHP.
However I miss my EOModeler and WebObjects terribly. PHP with
TextWrangler works but is a pain when you're used to Apple-style
development.
I was looking into NetBeans when I remembered WO is included in
Tiger. I launched XCode and indeed had a working prototype connecting
to my DB in a few minutes.
I'd love to continue along this path, but before going further, I
must start thinking about deployment. It seems I need a license?
So here is my question: what license(s) would I need for the
following options:
1/ a java application installed on client machines (Windows), talking
directly to MySQL
2/ a java application installed on client machines (Windows) talking
to a Linux application server (Apache/Tomcat/Whatever)
3/ web clients talking through HTML to a Linux application server
(Apache/Tomcat/Whatever)
4/ a java applet talking to a Linux application server (Apache/Tomcat/
Whatever)
5/ other possibilities ?
I'm trying to find the lowest possible cost solution which will allow
me to prove we should be investing more in Mac.
Thanks !
