Sacha thanks for the tips. Turns out it was all coincidence. I'd put
a WODirectConnectEnabled = false into /var/empty/Properties so both
Monitor and Wotaskd we're not starting in DirectConnect and resulting
in those weird errors. I'm happy once again!

I had a deployment setup running fine with Monitor/Wotaskd running at
startup. Now when trying to connect to either host.com:1085 or
host.com:56789 I get an error in Safari (other browsers just return
nothing). Both are running but apparently not able to return things
properly.
Accessing on a remote machine the message is "the server unexpectedly
dropped the connection". If I try to access from the server itself
with localhost I get "lost network connection" NSUrlErrorDomain:-1005
The cause of the problem began (or was complete coincidence) with a
dns hostname update that was done to match the servers hostname with
its dns hostname. After a restart things broke. Everything else on
the machine works fine including other things being served through
Apache.
Now it gets interesting, I thought this was maybe about permissiong
but if I start up both monitor and wotaskd manually by hand as the
appserverwith
sudo -u appserver /System/Library/WebObjects/JavaApplications/
wotaskd.woa/Contents/Resources/javawoservice.sh -appPath /System/
Library/WebObjects/JavaApplications/JavaMonitor.woa/JavaMonitor -
WOPort 56789
everything seems to work correctly. I'm digging through all the
configs and settings I can find to see if something is referring to
some dns related thing. but I'm not getting very far any help greatly
appreciated!
