NOTE: WebObjects Adaptor can built only with GNUMake.
I have downloaded and installed GNUMake for our Solaris box and then
compiled WOAdaptor as a DSO successfully.

as it is the Sun make it's doesn't support "--version" :/ sorry
(try -v
or -h --help to get the version).
And in our make.config file we have,
OS = {ADAPTOR_OS}
in your case try to change it to :
OS = SOLARIS
