Thanks Mike! Yes, I was just using 3GB as an example of something more than 1.5 or 2GB ;-) .... but this is great news for those huge data processing admin situations! Suck in tons of data and churn it!

I noticed that all versions after java 1.4 point to 1.6.0 on SL, so I guess that is an implied compatability statement?
no, it's an implied terrible decision. however, 1.6 works great.

2) vulcan:Versions admin$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_17"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04-248-10M3025)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.3-b01-101, mixed mode)

Hmmm "64-bit Server VM" on SL Client OS.

Does this mean I can allocate 3GB or more of RAM to my java 1.5 app?
there is no 1.5 on SL, but you should be able to allocate more than 3GB to a 1.6 64bit app.
