This gets better: I bumped up log4j.logger.er to DEBUG to see if I could get any more log output. The command line launch now completes. (What's the explanation there?) Won't launch in JavaMonitor (just sits there indefinitely showing the "trying to start" animated switch), and it's not producing any log output, even though the log output path is set to /tmp/ which is world-writable.
