From what I've read/heard, this is correct. The fact that it isn't
more common is because relatively few document types are packages. I
don't think it's in the HIG, because it's a NeXTStep thing rather
than a Mac OS thing.

I've always assumed that it stands for "directory", it being a
file package. The 'd' in rtfd would have the same meaning.
