You should make this static. Bind the action to a directAction and transfer the parameters in a standard html form. Refer to some WO book how to do this.
However after moving that to a DirectAction I still have not seemed to have fixed the problem. What is more confusing is that I load all my content out of XML so at this point I shouldn't be talking to EOs at all.
Talking to EOs has nothing to do with sessions.

If you have a component action and not calling "existingSession()" in your directAction, then yes.
Could WOImage be creating a session?
