Thanks for the hint, but I was looking for a chat that runs inside the browser. If the user has install a client, we could use whatever we want.
There are a few AJAX and Flash clients for XMPP /Jabber, most still in development. Flash ones don't work well with public Jabber servers because of security settings. One example: http://jwchat.sourceforge.net/

As an alternative to the GPLed Wildfire, there's http://www.open-im.net/en/ ( BSD license ). but I don't know whether the author got around to finish version 2.
