Interesting to see which turn the discussion took. I assume the answer to the problem is, that in the current state it's not possible. I worked around the problem by now.

The problem arose from the need to maintain a couple of IDs in a central place (table) and have several models use it. All I needed was relationships from the other models to the model in question, via n:m tables, without back relationships. I'm still slightly puzzled that it won't work.
