To reiterate, this is nightly BINARY BUILDS, not nightly SOURCE drops.

Without any reasonable release info, too.. so you may decide for yourself if you want or need that.

Well, looking at some of the current stuff, such as WO 5.4 javadoc, the release info available would be about as good as the release info tends to be, no? It probably cannot be worse.

This may be a good opportunity to ask if anyone wants to use something I am doing. I am creating a direct action that can be put into an app. It looks at the jars and class files in the app's classpath and can characterize the version of the frameworks being used. So, it just puts out a page and says here are checksums of the things I see in the current classpath.

Now, this is not so very interesting while WO releases come out of Apple at a breakneck once-every-year pace, but if they are putting out nightly builds and if there are changes made in those nightly builds (one can hope...), then there will be lots of questions about what version, really, someone is actually running. Right now, I am just writing out the checksum of these files, but I want to put up a bit of info on a web page to be "canonical" for version checking. On other words, right now the page says "here are the versions of the things I see." It could, though, check with the remote page and say "here are the versions of the things I see and these versions correspond to WO-nightly-July-1-2008" or "these versions correspond to WebObjects 5.4.2 as released."

This page could profile lots of other things about the environment, such as the PWO version, but I wanted to just start with this. This can also be a starting point for information that the community can compile about the different versions. In lieu of waiting to Apple to do something better.

If anybody would be willing to run this app, please let me know. I would just include it in this e-mail, but the source is ugly right now and I would not expect anyone to run a binary that I sent, just because. But if you are willing to run it and send me the output, I can start to build up the list of known (or unknown) configurations.

thanx - ray
