Hi!Excellent email! I've been arguing for some time now that SSD is the way to go for DBs, it's good that some real evidence is showing up. Seek time kills DBs. :)

And ALL the software (and hardware) is optimized for hard drives. Imagine when they optimize it for SSDs... :D
So I'm seriously looking into switching from our XRaid to a set of SSD drives in production. However, there are some challenges with this:1. Intel only makes the SSD in 1.8 and 2.5" form factors. Which means most rack mount raid enclosures can't hold the drives. IcyDock makes an adaptor for $20. But there will be LOTS of wasted space. Which is an issue later on.
Most server manufacturares will be able to sell you servers and storage with 2.5" bays. I don't know if they predicted the obvious, or if it's just for power, heat dissipation and density purposes, but some people are already using 2.5" drives on their servers.
Another challenge might be reliability. From what I've heard, flash disks are still too unreliable, and the memory cells die very often. I've even read somewhere that they make SSD drives in such a way that the capacity decreases with time, as dead cells are removed from operation. I find this very strange because it brings obvious file system management problems, but as I never used one, I totally lack experience.
