Why is my key always null?

Here is my custom component:

public class LinkToProject extends ERDCustomComponent {
        public EOEnterpriseObject object;
        public String key;

    public LinkToProject(WOContext context) {
        super(context);
    }

    
    public EOEnterpriseObject object() {
        return (EOEnterpriseObject) valueForBinding("object");
      }
     
      public String key() {
        return (String) valueForBinding("key");
      }
      
      
    public String projectTitle(){
        return (String)object().valueForKeyPath(key());
    }



The object comes over just fine ,but always a null key?
here is my rule:
(task = 'list' and entity.name = 'PortfolioProject' and propertyKey = 'title') 
componentName = 'LinkToProject'


Any ideas why the key would be null and not 'title' ?
