I've updated the component to something like this:

        public boolean synchronizesVariablesWithBindings() {
                return false;
        }       
        
        @Override
        public MESDriver object() {
                if(_driver == null) {
                        _driver = (MESDriver)valueForBinding("object");
                }
                return _driver;
        }

And it appears to be all in order now.
