not exactly, but I did have another model file that was affecting my project in 
question.  turns out that whenever I made a change to a model file the finder 
did not show that the file was updated.  that's weird.  does this make sense to 
anyone?  anyway, I got rid of the other model, long story, and all is fine now.

that's a couple hours out of my life I won't get back.  :-)
