The price performance survey for Sun hardware versus Intel hardware was pretty
informal. I wanted a box to run Solaris 2.6 to function as a db server with the
following specs:
300-400mhz
256 mb memory
8 gb ultra scsi 3
100 mbit ethernet
cheap video/monitor
I called 4 or 5 sun resellers. Brand new, a comparable Sun Ultra 2 was over $20K. A
used/rebuilt Ultra was somewhere around $13 -15K. Note, this was for only a single
2oomhz cpu and 4gb disk.
Next I priced the intel hardware. I got all the above for less than $2500 but with
dual 400mhz cpus. Solaris Server for Intel was another $700.
I understand about scalability and all that, but at the desktop/mini-tower level, I'm
not sure how Sun can compete. Also, I was at a company which had $100,000 sun boxes.
We were porting WOF/Openstep apps off of Mach/Intel and onto Solaris. For the longest
time, the Solaris box were 30-50% slower than the $2k intel box. Finally a Sun
engineer found a tcp packet problem and finally got the Solaris box to be about 10-20%
faster than the intel box. In some cases, it may be wiser to architect a distributed
system/application that can be run on many fast cheap boxes that to build a monolithic
application and expect it to perform well on big, expensive iron. Just my
opinion/experience.
Again, I wish Apple would provide a Solaris/Intel deployment version of WOF to
function as an application server for the same reasons.
