You might want to take a look at my EggTimer.app. It uses NSTimer quite
a bit and may do what you want in terms of a running-down clock that
brings up a display panel or plays a sound when it runs out. It is
written in Objective-C instead of Java, but that shouldn't be too much
of a problem to translate. You can find source code at:
