Umpf.. I tried it today and hit some larger problems which are only
solveable with infinite time... ;-(

I think it's "fixable" since it was working with "wget" a while ago. It
just seems someone redesigned the download area with too many browser
features (e.g. HTTP Cookies, JavaScript and SSL) and as a result you
need an up-to-date browser to download the ISO images. Even the "Jive"
monstrosity doesn't make it _this_ difficult... ;-(

IMO the following stuff may be nice if someone is going to redesign the
download area:
- Simple, IP-address-independent download URL (e.g. view the download
URLs on one machine and let another machine download them (usefull for
example if you are using headless machines for jumpstart&co.)) which is
valid ~~48h (more than 48h may not make sense (except the public NFS
thing below) since most DSL and ISDN connections are seperated by the
providers after 24h anyway). For example you could place the downloads
in a private directory and create hardlinks per download sessions (e.g.
/home/sundownloads/sx/ce/b83/x86/sx_ce_b83_x86_full.iso gets hardlinked
linked to /downloads/<userid>/<sessionid>/sx_ce_b83_x86_full.iso)
- Allow browsers which do not support javascript or SSL to log-in and
download the files
- Download via FTP, HTTP and public NFS (in that priority order. The
idea to use public NFS would allow people to mount the ISO directly and
create jumpstart servers without downloading a copy of the ISO image
first)
- Allow HTTP clients like "wget" and provide download instructions how
to use it to access the downloads
- Please send the MD5 checksums for the ISO files with the annoucement
emails. The idea is to seperate the downloaded files from the place
where the checksums are stored (e.g. a hacker may be able to manipulate
the ISOs but it is much more unlikely that the MD5 checksums in the
mailman archive and everyone's InBox can be hacked/changed, too)

Roland
