One problem solved.

When I ran SSE as root, it created the hidden .sunstudio directory in my home
directory with root permissions. This of course meant that I didn't have
permission to update it when I ran SSE from my normal staff user account.

However, I still don't know how to persistently set environment variables, or
even if that's the right way to achieve my objective. I do not want to set the
PATH and MANPATH variables everytime I need to run SSE, and I want other
programs to be able to find SSE files.

Some observations:

A single OpenSolaris user has to be both an administrator, programmer, and
user. You are either all three, or all screwed. So far I've had to remove
misconfigurations and compile programs in addition to just running applications.

OpenSolaris is not clear about root: Is it a Role, or is it a User? So far it's
treating it as not quite either. If this was done for backwards compatibility,
then it's a disaster. At least one build of OpenSolaris should sacrifice
backwards compatibility to implement a cleaner security model.
