Hello
I want to highlight a couple of problems I'm experiencing
when viewing 'ARC Case Archives' via the opensolaris web site.

These are not new problems. These 'issues' have
been around for a long time - years probably.
Up until now, I've always just grumbled to myself about this.
But today, I'm finding this really irritating, and so I have
finally decided to highlight these issue here.

Here are a couple of examples, but I know this applies to any
of the hundreds of similar pages:

http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/caselog/2008/427/
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/caselog/2007/660/

Now I would say that if you have very high speed access
to the opensolaris web server, my first issue is not a problem for you.

But if you are located half-way around the world from that web server,
on a normal Internet 'broadband' connection, then the time to load
any of those links is long - over 30 seconds is what I experience.
This is just too slow!!

I would say, that this 'performance' problem, is caused by the way
the 'Left-Hand-Side' (LHS) of the page is rendered. The LHS is
expanded to list each & every ARC case (for the particular year of the case),
and also the hyper-links on each ARC case 'home' page.
This makes it a very long list!!!

The second issue, if that because that LHS is so long, it is often way
way longer that the main contents areas displayed to the right.
This means that the scroll bar on the right of the web browser window
is useless for controlling the scrolling of the main contents areas.

My opinion is that the way the LHS is expanded to list each ARC case
and sub-heading is literately a waste of time, both for the server to generate
it,
and the end-users trying to view the page. I just do not see the point
of expanding all the heading of the LHS like that!!

It would, IMHO, be much letter to just have a single heading
for each year, like "ARC Cases from 2008". If you click on those heading
it lists all the cases for that year in the main content areas, allowing
you to 'drill down' from there. There is just no need for it all to
be expanded out on the LHS of the screen!

Sorry from the rant!
I do hope you will consider fixing this along the lines I suggest.
Many thanks
Nigel Smith
