Hi all, Reviewing this more yesterday and last night on stage.opensolaris.org, I realized there are a number of problems with using the CD icon for the free CD and the arrow icon for downloads, as follows:
If we change the Download icon, we break consistency with the Subsites and force them to re-implement two icons. For whatever time that takes to complete, we would have a situation where the CD icon means two different things (it would mean free CD from the main site pages, but would still link to the Downloads page from all the Subsites which are managed separately from the main site). At this point, support for the download arrow icon doesn't warrant that breakage and rework, especially since we are not anywhere near agreement about a preference for the arrow icon (as many folks like the icon as those who do not). Implementation of the arrow icon could also create new problems by changing the meaning and target of the most clicked icon on the site, the well-known Download icon that looks like a CD. In addition, six icons at the top is already too many and I haven't heard a preference for the blue bubbles with up-turned arrow icon. So, I suggest sticking with the original implementation that used the colored bubbles icon to replace the Get Help icon as the response to the request. I was asked to respond by tomorrow (Friday), so I want to set expectations about where I'm at with this after staging the alternatives and hearing all the feedback.
