After much fumbling around, it looks like things are back to normal. For the record: the problem was that this script: /shared/sac/Tools/bin/sac_rename_title trashed the /shared/sac/Archives/ProjectDB/project.db file. Instead of changing the name of just one project specified by ID, it randomly changed the *type* of some 5900 projects throughout the database. I was able to edit that project.db file (it's just text) and repair it. Renaming projects turns out to be a bad idea.
