We're planning some major changes to a set of project pages.
Is there a way to author off line? Would it be possible to set up
one's own Xwiki 1.8.x environment, author with that and then upload
the contents when complete?

What is the timescale for these changes?

You should be aware of the website transition phases outlined here

The short answer to your question is yes, you could install XWiki
yourself, author your pages and then have them uploaded, or even just
cut'n'paste, when we transition.

The version currently deployed on hub.opensolaris.org is 1.8.2, but I
expect that to be revised to take advantage of fixes and features in
later versions. The default syntax will be XWiki 2.0, so I recommend
using that.

Chris
