Just because /we believe/ or /fear/ that we need one is a bad argument
for it.
Sure, let's see what sort of feedback we get. The current choice
(disabled by default, enable-able by user's choice) is a good one, I guess.

Not too sure, but at the time the note was written by Manuel and your
note, Florian, the editor was still available when I logged in. I just
checked and it is still working. Thanks Manuel (as well for the fixes).
As to whether the use/non-use of the editor is a good indicator, I don't
think that we could judge it this way. It looks like the Wiki has had a
long culture of being wiki-code-user driven. Having a WYSIWYG editor
sounds like a relatively new addition (remember that I am still a
relatively new member at LibO, never having participated in OOo groups
at all). It will take a while for the news of WYSIWYG availability to
sink in with the general membership. It will take time for this news to
percolate down to the non-wiki-code editor users.
If we had a permanent use of WYSIWYG tools, which is what I believe we
have (except for the little bumps with problem tools), we will need to
advertise the "friendliness" of the wiki tool-set to the membership and
encourage them to join in and participate.
We also need to do a little more mentorship with new members to the
wiki. The bottom line is that the more knowledgeable our membership the
better results achieved.
So, unless there are severe problems, why would we not offer the WYSIWYG
editor as another selection of edititng tools for the wiki?
