Yes, that is what he meant (at least that was what I understand), and
indeed it is a modal dialog, one you have to deal with before being
able to do other stuff within your browser window. But still I don't
quite understand this as a problem.

Hmm - didn't experience that.

You can either
* request publication,
then there will be a "Worfklow" Tab that shows the changes or
* use the Versions-dropdown on the left-hand side and check "show
unpublished" and check "compare versions" - then select the current
edit and the last published one.

No, you're not reading what is on screen. When you already found the
point that shows published versions, then you did just overlook the
option. Look again in the versions dropdown (see above)

Well, this is true - as a workaround, use HTML-sourcecode view, copy
the html-source to an editor that supports search and replace, then
copy the edited html-sourcecode back.

yes - depending on how many places, this might be easier or not...
