NAS for $1500, is 10 times what I have to spend on backup drives or
internal systems, when I can get the money for equipment.
I am glad Florian and others have good contacts to get the needed
equipment for keeping the servers supplied with the needed space. We
could use all the help we can get with reducing the costs of both the
equipment and the monthly costs of service.
For us local/regional people, with little ability to get company
sponsorships, we rely on our own pockets to get the needed things to do
the work and do the marketing. My pockets are based on a fixed income
from having to quit working due to a debilitating set of injuries that
took me out of the job market and into a wheelchair half the time.
The local work community is having more and more business close their
doors or have their businesses barely keeping open. The only new jobs
in the county are in the retail "mega malls" that opened up outside of
the city proper. We just had one of our biggest "non-health-related"
employers close its doors increasing the unemployment rate in the county
by 1 or 2 percent.
So getting local sponsorship for anything is a real up-hill battle.

Florian a great company to document To get NAS server from for
colocation is IX systems. they produce the above machine for home
users, but they have more enterprise grade NAS servers.

I do not have any "true" Network Attached Storage device that is

How much storage is needed for the TDF/LO "network" of devices for
online access though the different web pages. I know that the

storage needs could be 4+ GB per release version [alpha, beta, RC,
or final release] That adds up really fast over the release
cycle. Then there are all of the other files stored on TDF/LO
servers that are a part of the Wiki pages and such. Then there is
the . . . Then there is the . . . .
I think it would do "us" good if we could be given a grant to
double or quad the amount of storage that TDF/LO currently uses.
Maybe then it would last another 2 years +/- before more is needed.

Of course, I think you can never have too much storage
capacity.
My Ubuntu desktop has 5-TBs internally [1-TB, 2-TB, 2-TB]
and 4-TB
externally via USB drives [2-TB, 2-TB]. I have almost 4-TB of
files and data that the 2 external drives are used for
backup, but
I keep increasing the number of files I store on my
desktop. An
example is the fact that I rip all my CDs to MP3 files and now
have over 100 hours of Christmas music on my desktop for the
holidays. I have almost every album that "The Carpenters"
recorded as well. Then there are the other audio and
video files
I love to watch on the computer, or streaming through the
blu-ray
player.
SO, I am a advocate for as much drive space for active and
back up
files as one can afford.
