Hi Jay, it's a bit difficult for me to answer your question. The new start page of extensions and templates will get a search form like in the current sites. There will also be search links for all categories (without the search for a specific version of LibreOffice).
We could create different collections of content: http://docs.plone.org/develop/plone/functionality/collections.html I didn't create a search api yet. I didn't investigate yet, if there is already such api in default Plone.
