Amanda I didn't want to discourage your use of -xO4. From our extensive conversations with the compiler folk(on Ruby), Darryl and Miriam(who're probably on this alias too) - it's clear that -xO4 does not hurt compatibility. My personal pref. would be to leave -xO4 in if we know that it doesn't hurt performance - no scientific reasoning - just a preference.
