Details aside, I missed how this thread started down this path but one thing to keep in mind is that the current Apache conf.d model is about a year old in Solaris/OpenSolaris (so long already?) so while its not necessarily cast in stone forever, it's also not something to be changed lightly anymore. If there are substantial benefits to an alternate mechanism it's worth exploring but keeping in mind there is significant pain in changing such a user-visible configuration interface. -- Jyri J.
