4.1 is, essentially, and end of life product. Support for 4.1 is only  
available if you pay for a specific support contract. (see the big  
warning we placed on http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/index.html).

We consider 5.0 to the currently recommended stable release.

I'll update the documentation on the 5.1 page to highlight this fact,  
because it should have been changed already.
