I've just hit the same issue today.  We're using onblur/onkeyup events in the
app I'm testing as well.  I'll give your groovy workaround a shot, but wanted
to add my vote for ~someone~ :) to find a solution on this as well.

Idea:
Perhaps, the setInputField and other set... calls could have an option 
available to trigger the onkeyup event to be fired.
