Thanks for that tip Aaron; the cookie was sent to the browser, but what I 
didn't know about was the 'path' property of the cookie:  looking at the 
Mozilla cookie manager, I realized that I had refactored the WK code and the 
cookie's path was set to a subdirectory.  So, in step 5 below the browser 
was getting the cookie because the servlet was in the correct path.
