I'm running Webware on a production server to which I am still making
software updates. Sometimes it's necessary for me to stop the
application server for a few minutes during the update, because I can't
allow any persistent data to change.

I'm using Apache with mod_webkit, and I'd like to avoid the user seeing
the 'Internal Server Error' (500) which occurs when mod_webkit can't
contact the application server. If the app server is down, I'd prefer
to redirect to a static page which looks like the rest of the website,
which says the effect of 'Down for maintenance; try again in a few
minutes'.

Has anyone done something like this before? Can this be done from the
Apache config (perhaps by detecting error 500?), or do I have to dig
into the mod_webkit source?
