Dear Forum Members:
I heard that this forum was the correct place to pose my question.  I am a medical transcriptionist who has 4 other transcriptionists working for me.  I run my business out of my house.

I recently attended our profession's conference where I received a bit of a shock and I from what I was told, there is more to come.  A large group of us got together at the conference to talk about our HIPPA problems.

I found out that I am probably not helping my customers be compliant by the way I run my business and the way we all do our work.  If there is any comfort in the problem it is that I'm not alone with these problems.  In our talks at the conference we estimated that there are probably thousands of others like us in the industry.

       My questions are -
1. If I get some passwords for my computer and stop my family and friends from using it so that I can get in sync with the privacy law, will I be in sync with the security law too?

2. Does the security law affect me directly or is it like the privacy law and only affect my customers?

3. A lot of us at the conference felt that we could either try to deal with this or do what a lot of others are doing and just tell our customers that we are compliant.  Most of us leaned to dealing with this, but the arguments were strong to just tell everyone we are because of the added costs and many of us live from paycheck to paycheck.

Thank you for your help,

S.T. Smith
