California Medicaid (Medi-Cal) is moving forward with the adoption of coding standards mandated by HIPAA. The HIPAA final rule significantly impacts the Medi-Cal program, as there are well over 8,000 codes that do not comply with the HIPAA standards. The conversion of Medi-Cal local codes to HIPAA mandated standards will occur in multiple phases, with the first implementation scheduled for October 2003. For detailed information about Medi-Cal's HIPAA implementation strategy and local code conversions scheduled for October 2003, please refer to the "HIPAA Update" section of the Medi-Cal website: www.medi-cal.ca.gov. This website will be updated monthly to include more specific information about implementation timelines and code conversion instructions. Please monitor this website regularly for updates. We have heard that there are about 7,000 local codes and that they are a major issue at this point. Any information you can provide will be appreciated. Thanks.
