First shot: disabled Skyfield and Skymap, restarted weewx and watched: Skyfield (or more precisely the Skyfield based almanac extension) can return None for events like rising and setting if they do not take place on that day. The PyEphem based almanac returns the event of the next or previous day in that situation. This is a difference between them.
