There is a real push for open data in govt. In fact it is now mandated and 
although the wheels of government move slowly we are seeing a lot more data 
being opened. I was one of the founders of open.org.nz and there has been a 
lot of progress over the last 3 years.

We just don't have the granular data available to do the crime mashups. I 
suggest moving along and finding something more interesting ;-)


You might want to ask here <http://groups.open.org.nz/groups/ninja-talk> for 
other links. That list includes those within Govt and outside. One dataset 
I just thought of is The Charities Commission which has an API.
