In my photo, the front of the National is about where the back of a
bus in bay eight of the current bus station would be - the market
building is a good reference point. Until 1973 there was track
through the old Low Level station and my vantage point would have been
approximately where the platform was (although the passenger service
some years before that). The current rail service uses the site of
the old High Level station which was originally on the Pontypool Road
to Neath line. A new connection was built at Cwmbach in 1973 to link
that line with the line down the valley to Abercynon. This enabled
the closure of the track through Low Level and, more significantly,
the level crossing on Commercial Street, about where the roundabout is
now. The passage of a freight over that crossing caused a fair degree
of chaos!

I thought it might be nice to contrast with Aberdare Bus Station (or
Low Level Station Yard as it was known then) in 1979 and rather
different weather conditions.
