Martin,

Dot-matrix destination displays are a complete pain for photographers.

The problem arises because they constantly "refresh", i.e. are not "on" all the
time time, although the persistence of vision that we have gives the impression
that the light coming from them is constant.

The only way to guarantee that the display will come out in a photograph is to
use a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second or slower. Unfortunately, that will
rule out taking photos of moving vehicles. If you want/need to photograph
buses on the move it will be "pot luck" whether you fire the shutter at the
moment when the display is "on". What you can do (if your camera is so
equipped) is to take a burst of (say) three shots and at least one of them
should be OK.

At least we don't (yet) have this problem in London with TfL-tendered routes !

Subject: Help - Photographing Stagecoach Destination Blinds

I seem unable to consistently photograph Stagecoach vehicles showing
their destination blinds, as a proportion of my pictures are showing black
screens, normally the pictures that are of real interest. I seem to remember
sometime ago Barrie suggesting that I need to use a slow shutter speed because
of screen refreshing. I have taken a look at McKenna Brothers website of LED
and DOT matrix electronic destination blinds but cannot find any reference to
photography. lol. Can anyone explain the technicalties of this. Ta.
