I also despised them at first and used to refuse to get on them and wait for the Coastliner. However I didn't mind the later 709D combination as much with Alexander bodywork, or even Plaxton bodywork.
Incidentally I remember one of the L608Ds from the D-VCC batch being set on fire in an arson attack in Llandudno Junction depot around this time, it later got repaired.
