You're right about the X49 Andrew. It initially operated two hourly
between Cardiff and Hereford and used the M4, A449 and A40 between
Newport and Monmouth. Journey time was about 1hr 50min end to end. I
believe it was operated by Ross, by two coaches in the 'venetian
blinds' white, blue and red coach livery with branding applied. Barry
depot also had an involvement, though this may just have been on
Wednesdays (Hereford market day) when a duplicate of the 0900-ish
journey from Cardiff was required.
