Oh for the days when Midland Red West operated a decent service between Hereford, Ludlow, Kidderminster and Birmingham!
I’m not sure what is normal for this (now tendered?) route now, which is a shadow of its former self. A couple of weeks ago I was in Ludlow and Diamond were operating a couple of ex-First Darts on it which looked a little on the tatty side still in First livery. One was P401MLA (31508), and I can’t remember the other. I suppose now Rotala’s Kidderminster and Redditch aquisitions have been cleared, they can go ahead and repaint the old First stock but really, they could do with upgrading some of the fleet altogether. Even back in the early 90’s, a Solo wouldn’t have provided anywhere near the capacity required for a lot of trips on this route. From my own observations in the ‘First’ years, passenger numbers have declined. Not surprisingly, given the way First treated the area - managing decline rather than promoting growth. I hope Rotala can reverse the decline in the Kidderminster operating area, but I have my doubts. They must have some very desperate people wanting to travel. There was a reason MR used to use DPs and coaches.
