This patch is VERY BAD idea.....
It completely precludes possibility to access multiple webcams at the
same time.
I'm in a middle of the pilot project that doing it for surveillance
application.
If you want rework webcam API please take a look on
http://www.mbdsys.com/opensource/verona which
has much cleaner version of webcam api

P.S. It would be great if folks on the list did discuss modifications
they are planning to do,
this could accelerate developpement 5-fold.
