Follow-up Comment #1, bug #14535 (project wesnoth):
On issue (b), the difference is intentional. The "Royal Warrior" icon is
armed cap-a-pied and represents a king (or, in other contexts, possibly a
crown prince) at war.
I'll look into issue (a).
