Follow-up Comment #1, bug #14638 (project wesnoth):
The large black area is for chat. When playing MP, the on screen chat
covers the map, making it difficult to see the northwestern hexes. The map
is too small to pan away from this area, hence the extra black space.
Players in solo mode may not notice the need for this space.
