Follow-up Comment #1:
In case anyone gets this problem too:
There's a file "preferences" in the userdata directory with a setting
clock_format; this had the value yes for me. Deleting that line solved the
problem for me. (No idea how it got wrong.) If anyone can reproduce getting
yes for that setting it is a bug; but the time display at least works as it
should.
