Ugh, looks like gna doesn't like non-Latin characters.
20161122 17:13:17 error gui/layout:
pango_text::font::pango_text::set_markup_helper text 'Chinese <i>Chinese</i>
Chinese <i>Chinese<i> Chinese' has broken markup, set to normal text.
