http://wiki.wesnoth.org/Customizing_AI_in_Wesnoth_1.8#how_AI_works.2C_a_short_developer-oriented_overview
and then try to read the C++ source code in src/ai

Ask questions, if you'll have any. Try coding your own (C++ or Lua) stage
or candidate action, or adding debug logs to some existing candidate
actions.
Also play Wesnoth more (especially multiplayer vs humans), if you haven't
played it much before.
